Dalegarth Moor

General Information

Moorland terrain with rock and contour features characterise the upper part of the area and sections of mature woodland make up the rest of the area, mainly on the lower slopes between the open moor and the Eskdale Valley.

There was very little bracken in evidence on the moor in early May 2011 and the woods were quite clear of undergrowth. Conditions are likely to be the same for BOC 2012.

Running is likely to be fast on the open moor unless it is very wet prior to the event in which case the fastest routes will be the ones avoiding the worst of the marshy ground. In the wooded areas care will be needed on the slopes which have areas of rock covered by moss.

To remain competitive please avoid the embargoed area.

Prize giving for the Long Championships will be held on Sunday 6th May, immediately after the relay races at Helsington Barrows. A provisional time for this is 1.30 pm, exact time will be confirmed in the final details.

British Long Distance Championships will feature in the UK Masters Cup, competitors should enter the age-class in which they want to score points.

Clubs are strongly encouraged to bring club tents for this event. There is plenty of space in the assembly area and on the buses from Ravenglass. You will not have to carry tents for any distance. The North West Junior Squad will be organising tent transfer from assembly to Helsington Barrows - for a donation which will go towards the squads trip to Norway in 2012. If you wish to use this service please contact the day organiser.

Parking and Transport to Assembly

To ensure the smooth running of the event transport system and to minimise disruption to residents and members of the general public, all entrants and their accompanying party shall travel to the Assembly Field on the organised coach service, the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway or by walking or cycling from their accommodation. To enforce this requirement the Organiser reminds all entrants of British Orienteering Rules 2012 - Rule 3.3.1 The Organiser shall have discretion to refuse or revoke an entry.

Please only use the car parks arranged for orienteers as there are other events taking place in and around the village that need to use the regular parking areas.

Parking is at Ravenglass village (GR 089 967) and transport to the assembly area at Dalegarth will be by bus. You will be notified of fixed bus times for travel to assembly. The cost of the necessary parking and bus transport to the assembly area at Dalegarth is included in your entry fee at £4 per person.

Parking at Ravenglass and bus transport are compulsory for those not staying in Eskdale.

For those staying in Eskdale there will be no parking available at assembly. The organiser asks that you walk or cycle to assembly.

For more detail on the bussing arrangements and advice on travel times between parking and Ravenglass and Assembly please see Transport Arrangements.

On the race day do not approach Dalegarth or Ravenglass over the Hardknott Pass from the east. Anyone who has experienced the Hardknott and Wrynose pass route will know that suggesting a large number of people use it at the same time in the same direction will mean traffic chaos, significant delays and a strong chance you will miss your start time.

The roads around the assembly and competition area are narrow and winding; additional traffic on these routes will cause significant problems for road traffic management and will impact on the safety of the event. Additional traffic is likely to delay the buses carrying competitors to the assembly area. Equally, part of the competition will use one of the minor roads around the area. A road closure was requested, granted but deemed unecessary following close consultation with several stakeholders, including local residents. The organisers thank everyone for their understanding and apologise for any inconvenience caused.

Finally, the goodwill of the local people who have been very helpful regarding this event will be lost, jeopardising future events, if people ignore the careful planning that has gone into this event.

Competitor traffic should only use the A595 to reach Ravenglass from either a Northerly or Southerly direction.

There is no parking available for caravans. Minibuses, Campervans and motorhomes can be accommodated (for parking only) at Ravenglass.

Small campervans (Bongoes, T4s and T5s) will be able to park at Ravenglass. Anything larger or heavier will be parked in the hard standing village car park. Please complete the box on the entry system if you intend to come in a larger campervan.

Dogs

Please note that dogs will not be permitted to travel on the buses to Dalegarth and dog owners will be required to make alternative arrangements for them on this day.

The parking fields are considerable distance from the assembly field and competitors should not contemplate leaving dogs in cars at the parking field.

Dogs are allowed only in the Assembly field and providing they are kept on a lead as adjacent fields will have sheep lambing in them.

The Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway (La'al Ratty) have offered a reduced return fare from Ravenglass to The Green (Eskdale Green) of £8.00 for adults, £4.00 for children and £3.00 for dogs.

For those staying in the Eskdale Valley you can walk (with your dog) or cycle to the event.

Start Details

Details for British Long Distance Championships are included in the programme which will be made available here.

Race bibs will be available at the assembly area and should be collected by competitors on their way to the start.

Colour Coded courses

White, Yellow and Orange courses will be available for entry on the day only (no pre-entry).  These range in difficulty, progressing from both physically and technically very easy (white) to more difficult (orange).

Safety

Competitors are reminded that orienteering is an adventure sport and that they take part at their own risk. Competitors should bring waterproof jackets in case they are needed for bad weather days. Competitors are recommended to carry whistles.
